About Nigeria

QUICK FACTS

Nigeria, with a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations, including the Nok culture (1000 BCE – 300 CE) is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be uncovered. Located on Africa’s western coast, Nigeria is a significant player in regional and global affairs, with a strategic position on the world map, bordered by Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Benin, and a coastline along the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean.

With an estimated population of approximately 237,981,804 people and a growth rate of 2.055% per annum, Nigeria was colonized by the British Empire from the mid-19th century and gained its independence on October 1, 1960, after 46 years of direct colonial rule.

Nigeria, being Africa’s most populous nation with a growing economy and wealth of opportunities, boasts of an incredible array of landscapes, cultures, and natural resources. From the arid north to the humid equatorial south, the country’s geography is as diverse as its people.

The Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria is Abuja, which is a modern city, while Lagos, the former capital, remains the country’s commercial and industrial hub.

Nigeria’s landscape is characterized by vast plains, plateaus, and mountains. The Sokoto Plains in the northwest and the Borno Plains in the northeast are home to soft, sedimentary rocks and waterlogged plains.

In contrast, the Jos Plateau, located in the centre of the country, features high plains, broad valleys, and extinct volcanoes. The southeastern border with Cameroon is marked by the majestic Cameroon Highlands, where the country’s highest peaks, including Chappal Waddi and Mount Dimlang are found.

Ethnic groups

Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups, each with its own distinct culture and traditions. The three major ethnic groups are the Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo. Other notable groups include the Edo, Ibibio, Tiv, and Nupe. This diversity has contributed to the country’s vibrant cultural landscape, with various festivals, music, and art forms.

Languages

With over 520 native languages spoken across the country, Nigeria is a multilingual nation. The major languages include, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Fula, and English, which is the official language. This linguistic diversity reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage and its ability to adapt to different influences.

Religion

Nigeria is a religiously diverse country, and this has shaped the country’s people culture and way of life. Basically, the three major religions practiced in the country are Islam, Christianity and Traditional religions.

Economy

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy, with a GDP of over $400 billion, driven primarily by its petroleum industry. The country has abundant natural resources, including oil, natural gas, solid minerals, and fertile agricultural land.

Environment & Climate

🌊Drainage System

Nigeria’s drainage system is characterized by several major rivers, including the Niger and Benue rivers, which flow through the country and empty into the Gulf of Guinea.

The Niger Delta is a vast low-lying region through which the waters of the Niger River drain into the Gulf of Guinea. Other notable rivers include the Sokoto, Kaduna, and Gongola rivers.

☀️Climate

Nigeria’s climate varies from tropical in the south to arid in the north. The south experiences high temperatures and high humidity throughout the year, with two distinct seasons: the rainy season (March to November) and the dry season (December to February).

The north experiences a savanna climate, with a marked wet and dry season, while the far north experiences a steppe climate with little precipitation. The harmattan, a hot and dry northeast trade wind, blows across the country during the dry season.
